Women’s Day Is Coming —Here’s What You Should Know! 🔥

Why Is Women's Day Celebrated?

International Women’s Day is more than just a date. It is a global holiday that highlights the acts of courage made by women throughout history. From the right to vote to gender equality, it focuses on the economic, cultural, political, and social shifts women strive for and the issues they still face every day. 🚺

Here are the three reasons why International Women’s Day is widely recognized:

Celebrate Women’s Achievements ✨
History has come a long way from the time when women couldn’t vote, access education, or even be considered citizens. So, on International Women’s Day 2025, we unite to cherish all the self-sufficient and brave women who fought for equality so others can enjoy the same opportunities.
Support a Gender-Equal World 🌍
Still, at this time, lots of problems remain regarding education barriers, workplace discrimination, and unequal access to health care. That’s why, on Women’s Day 2025, we call for a change on the issues that need to be addressed to build a world where equality is more than a promise, but a reality.
Raise Awareness & Inspire Change 📢
Remember, knowledge is power. And while it’s hard to hide under a rock in 2025, a few people still need to be aware of the issues women are facing. To fight against it, we must share the correct information and spotlight the challenges and triumphs that define women’s journey around the world.

Above all, Women’s Day 2025 is a time to stand united, reflect on the progress we’ve made, and trace the path to a future that’s bright, equal, safe, and empowering for women everywhere. 🌍✨

Where Is Women’s Day Celebrated?

Officially recognized by the United Nations (UN) in 1977, International Women’s Day is an official holiday in many nations around the world, including Armenia, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Laos, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, and Uganda.

While in other countries it doesn’t hold an official status as a public holiday, it is still a widely recognized celebration, with countries worldwide holding rallies, marches, and protests. It’s a time to commemorate the groundbreaking achievements women have fought for while assuming the challenges ahead.

This means that International Women’s Day 2025 is the perfect opportunity for your business to stand in solidarity with this movement. For instance, you can hold special events, partner with non-profit organizations, or promote initiatives to advocate for women’s rights.

For International Women’s Day 2025 and beyond, this encouraging message stands strong: everyone, everywhere can fight for change.  💜🌍♀️

As the International Women’s Day movement rises with force, we acknowledge the achievements and courageous acts of those who paved the way for a more equal world.

So, if you’ve ever wondered how International Women’s Day started, then read ahead:

🟣 1909
On February 28, the first National Women’s Day took place in the United States. This day came to honor the workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against unfair labor conditions.
🟣 1910
In continuance with the huge movement for women’s rights and universal suffrage, International Women’s Day was established at the second International Conference of Working Women held in Copenhagen. At this event, over 100 women from 17 different countries voted for this decision.
🟣 1911
Following the Conference of Working Women, International Women’s Day was commemorated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. More than 1 million women and men attended rallies all over Europe to demand equal work conditions and stop job discrimination.
🟣 1917
Women in Russia marched to protest against the backdrop of World War. They went on strike for “Bread and Peace”, as over 2 million Russian soldiers had died in this conflict. Four days later, the Czar and the provisional government granted women the right to vote.
🟣 1975
The United Nations designated March 8 as International Women’s Day. During this year, the first UN World Conference on Women was held in Mexico City to advocate for gender equality and the role of women in world peace.
🟣 2000
The World March of Women was first launched on Match 8 with the motto “2000 reasons to march against poverty and sexist violence”. This global movement united advocates in a collective mobilization to reclaim feminism as a force for all women, rather than for institutions, standing against patriarchy and capitalism.
🟣 2014
World leaders reunited at the United Nations to strategize on a plan for the future through the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This pledge focuses on issues like gender equality, women’s rights, security, and the active involvement of women in politics.
🟣 2015
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was established. It focuses on ending all forms of discrimination against women and providing equal access to education, healthcare, and work. Its goals give every woman activist on the planet a clear path to follow in the journey of gender equality.
🟣 2020
With the approval of the Period Products Act, Scotland became the first country to provide free and universal access to menstrual products in public buildings such as schools, colleges, and universities. This campaign represented a shift in the discourse towards menstruation, health, and well-being.
🟣 Now
The rise of digital activism enabled women worldwide to use Internet platforms and tools as a way to raise awareness on gender issues. Through resources like forums, on-theme hashtags, and online events they protest inequality and advocate for their right to education, healthcare, and social justice.

Throughout history, women have fought for their rights and to access the same opportunities as men to end all forms of inequality and discrimination, each year coming a little closer to a balanced gender parity rate, among other achievements.

💡 Noteworthy: Gender parity is a statistical measure that compares men and women through their incomes, work hours, and other social metrics for equality.

While this date brings attention to these issues, the message of International Women’s Day resonates year-round: ensuring a brighter future where all women are recognized, respected, and empowered to reach their fullest potential. ✨

FAQ

On March 8, 1908, around 15,000 women marched in New York to seek a reduction in their work hours, advocate for equal work pay and voting rights, and end poor working conditions and child labor. This protest paved the way for Women’s Day as one year later, this holiday was established at the second International Conference of Working Women to honor the strike of garment workers in the U.S.

Later on, the movement also gained traction as a tragic historical event took place. On March 25, 1911, more than 120 women and over 20 men died as the Triangle Waist Company building caught fire in New York City. This brought attention to the inhumane work conditions people suffered, particularly young immigrant women. Now, while these dates and their significance were already commemorated in different countries, it wasn’t until 1975 that the UN officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day.

Purple is the most representative color for Women’s Day because it alludes to justice and dignity. However, it’s also very common to see it accompanied by green, which represents hope, and white, which symbolizes women’s equality. That is why these powerful colors were chosen for this special day.

For this important day, there are many actions you can take. Some are more accessible than others, but in the end, they all still significantly impact the community. Take a look:

  • Participate in the campaign or protest of the year.
  • Send messages of appreciation or personalized gifts to the women who inspire you the most.
  • Support small businesses run by women.
  • Donate or support a women’s foundation or organization with actions.
  • Do a fun International Women’s Day trivia game with your colleagues.
  • Design storytelling workshops for women to share their stories.
  • Give awards for exceptional women recognizing their work and contribution.
  • Create a book club.
  • Post your favorite quotes and leaders on social media and share your support.
  • Wear purple or any accessory that shows you are in favor of continuing to preserve this day and what it entail.
  • Inform yourself about the current campaign and know your rights.
  • Promote gender equality in your family, with your circle, and in your workplace.
  • Be true to yourself and do what makes you happiest!
